Bridging Gaps

Why Now

This movement extends beyond the U.S. context. Across the African diaspora and the global South, communities face the compounded impacts of climate change, textile waste colonialism, and modern slavery. Western overproduction and textile dumping continue to destabilize ecosystems, economies, and labor conditions across Africa and the Caribbean, even as these regions face some of the harshest climate impacts.

By bridging HBCUs with diaspora communities, HBCU Climate Week seeks to close the gap between local and global climate struggles, fostering shared strategies for resilience, circular economies, and environmental justice.

Social Sustainability for a Better Future

Why Now

HBCUs are uniquely positioned to lead this response. With 101 institutions nationwide, including more than 30 undergraduate and 15 graduate programs in environmental studies, HBCUs form a powerful network of research capacity, cultural influence, and trusted leadership.

Historically at the forefront of civil rights and social justice movements, HBCUs can now serve as climate innovation hubs, bridging science, policy, technology, and culture to build regenerative, climate-resilient futures.
